It will take the form of a presentation of citizenship, volunteer and Australia Day awards from 4.30 pm to be followed by a Great Aussie BBQ with entertainment and a community expo from 6.00 pm onwards. Melbourne band, Mustered Courage, will headline Meander Valley Council’s Community Concert in Deloraine on March 22, 2014. This gig, plus accompanying workshop and school visit, will run in partnership with the Deloraine Stringfest Tasmania program. Ratepayers are reminded that payment of the third rates Instalment is due on Friday, January 31, 2014. Interest at 9.35 per cent per annum will accrue on a daily basis for overdue amounts until paid. Payments can also be made via direct debit, Bpay(see back of rate notice for details), at any Australia Post outlet or at Service Tasmania Shops. Ratepayers experiencing financial difficulties should contact the Rates Officer, on 6393 5335 to make alternative arrangements for payment or to obtain a Direct Debit Application. If you are in possession of a current Pension/Health Care Card with a Card Start Date prior to or on July 1, 2013 and reside at the property for which you are claiming the rebate please contact Council on 6393 5300 for an Application form if you have not already done so for the 2013-14 financial year. If you are interested in learning new skills, facing new challenges, building new friendships, becoming more involved in community, developing self-awareness, experiencing leadership and having lots of fun, then a Stepping Stones Camp is for you. A Stepping Stones Leadership Camp for young people aged 18-25 years who live in the Meander Valley, will be held from 7pm Friday, February 7, to 4.30 pm on Sunday February 9, 2014. This will be heavily subsidised to just $25 per person. Numbers are limited so secure your place now. The camps are coordinated by Meander Valley Council who is committed to providing quality learning opportunities for young people. Funding and support is available for smallholders in the Meander Valley area, defined as rural properties up to approximately 50 hectares. Subject to guidelines, funding is available to help with environmental projects such as fencing to keep stock out of bush or waterways, and for revegetation and establishing native shelter belts. There is also a new Property Management Planning program tailored to smallholders. During January 2014, Meander Valley Council is partnering with D.I.E.R., the highways management agency, for a concerted effort to address long-standing community concern over ragwort prevalence in the Deloraine – Elizabeth Town area. In addition to direct roadside weed control, it is hoped that private landowners in the area with ragwort will take steps to join in with the clean-up. As of November 26, all eggs in Tasmania that are sold for retail and provided through catering businesses now require an individual stamp that identifies the producer. This information is relevant for all food businesses and caterers including supermarkets, market stalls, deli’s, independent retailers and grocers. Sampling has commenced for this summer season and four popular recreational swimming locations will be monitored regularly from December through until March, 2014. Testing is to ensure the water at these locations remain safe for public use and most importantly, human health. If monitoring reveals that the quality of the water has been compromised in any way, investigations will commence. Each focus on Meander Valley through four themes: Natural Landscape, Heritage, Agriculture, and People of the Valley. The exhibition will run until February 16, 2014 and viewing is free in business hours. Meandering 2013, now its seventh year, is provided through a partnership between Meander Valley Council, Launceston Art Society and Country Club Tasmania. Tas Medicare Local has released a new mobile phone app to help Tasmanians source after hours medical assistance from wherever they are. The applications are available for both Android and iPhone smartphones and provide real-time access to information about after-hours services. Users can store their own GP’s phone number and the app also puts people in touch with medical services they can use when their regular GP might not be available. Many schools have extensive grounds and buildings which are ideally suited for community based sport and recreation activities. Applications for the Tasmanian Youth Parliament 2014 organising Taskforce are now open! The Youth Parliament program is a week-long residential camp held annually in the winter school holidays. It caters to young people aged 14 to 18 and aims to educate and empower them through hands-on experience discussing and debating political matters and current 'hot topics' in the Tasmanian Parliament House. Tasmanians aged 18 to 25 are encouraged to apply for a place on the Taskforce - more information and the application form are available at at http://youthparliament.org.au or by searching for 'Tasmanian Youth Parliament' on Facebook. The program is supported by the State Government's Department of Premier and Cabinet. This program provides grants of between $15 000 and $80 000 to clubs, associations, local government and other not-for profit providers of sport and active recreation. Eligible projects include major equipment purchases and the development/improvement of facilities or playing surfaces that are essential for and directly related to the provision of new or improved sport and/or active recreation participation opportunities. The giant Westbury Wickets that stand six metres high on the edge of the Westbury Recreation Ground have been included in a national publication called Big Aussie Icons, by Five Mile Press. This book originally appeared in 2009 and a new, expanded edition will come out in April or May 2014.
